What is the best way to apply blusher?

Many makeup artists would say that you do a cheesy grin and start on the apples of the cheeks and blend up.  Others would say start at the top of the cheek and blend down to the apples.

I think that as long as long as you get the desired look for your blusher you should use the technique that suits you.  Blusher should enhance your skin tone and accentuate your cheekbones.  Blusher gives cheeks a pop of colour but should not dramatically change it, you want to avoid the clown look.

How I apply blusher depends on the blusher and the client.

If I have a client with a long face I would start at the apples of the cheeks and concentrate the colour there.  However if I want to elongate the face I would start at the top of the cheek with a powder blush and using an angled brush blend down.

When using a cream blusher and going for a vintage look I would start at the apples of the cheeks and blend upwards using a finger.

Hope this has helped x

What are your favourite brand of brushes you use to apply blusher? Is it worth investing in the expensive Dior or YSL range or are the mid range ones just as good?

    1. Hi Kerry

It depends whether you are going to clean and maintain your brushes, if yes it’s worth investing as I have brushes from Mac that are still going strong after 10 years! I also use Ciara Dalybrushes and techniques for my kit.

If you are not going to go to the trouble if maintaining them try Primark, I bought a bronzer brush from there and it hasn’t malted, quite impressed.

      Hope I have helped.
